The Place

Everything
in between

The special surroundings create moments you will remember for a lifetime. Whether it is a swim in the river, or an hour in the dog yard — we would love you to join us.

The seasons

Take a peek into what each season has to offer — they are all wildly different.

SummerJune – August

For two months there is no night. Dinner at eleven, still in shirtsleeves. The river runs green over gravel and the dogs lie in the shade of the pines waiting for it to be cold again.

  • The midnight sun
  • Canoeing the Kárášjohka
  • Swimming in the river
  • Puppies, and a great many of them
  • Pack-dog hikes on the plateau
  • Picking blueberries, cloudberries and lingonberries

AutumnSeptember – November

Two weeks when the whole plateau turns red and gold at once — the Sámi call it ruska. Mushrooms under the birches, and the dogs back in harness on wheels, counting down.

  • Hiking in the ruska colours
  • Mushrooms under the birches
  • Moose hunting, and harvesting and preserving vegetables for the winter
  • Dog training on wheels
  • Darker evenings — from now on the northern lights dance in the sky
  • The first snow, usually October

WinterDecember – April

3–4 hours of twilight at the shortest, then a night sky exploding with Aurora Borealis — and one more hour of daylight every week. The Finnmark plateau is waiting for you, whether you want to go with a dog team or under your own steam on skis.

  • The sun stays below the horizon from around 20 November to 20 January
  • Northern lights until the beginning of April
  • Perfect nature experiences for those who don't like it too crowded
  • 50 000 reindeer have their winter pasture in the Karasjok area

The kitchen

One long table, where everyone shares a meal. Local food is at the heart of what we serve. Most of our ingredients come from right here in the surrounding area – from the forest, the sea, our neighbours, and our own garden and greenhouse.

The moose is hunted locally, while the reindeer meat and sheep come from our neighbours. All the fish we serve is wild-caught, including salmon caught at sea using traditional fishing methods.

During the season, we pick berries and herbs from the forests around us and grow our own vegetables, fresh greens, and herbs in our garden and greenhouse. Many of these ingredients find their way into our homemade jams, spreads, and dishes. For us, growing and gathering our own food is a natural part of living sustainably and in harmony with the landscape around us.

We serve breakfast, lunch, and buffet dinner in the lodge dining room, which seats up to 12 guests. Meals are included when you take part in one of our programmes. If you are staying at the lodge independently, meals need to be booked in advance.

At breakfast, you can also prepare your own lunch packet to take with you – perfect for enjoying around a campfire while out exploring or back at your cabin.

For a special dining experience, dinner can be served in Barta, our traditional gathering place where up to 18 guests can sit together around the warmth of the fire.

The dog yard

Open to guests at any hour. Bring nothing, expect to be thoroughly inspected, and do not promise a puppy anything you cannot deliver.

The sauna

Our sauna is small, cosy and candle-lit. We fire it up with birch from our own forest. The stream just below has a hand-built little pool — perfect for a cold plunge.

Barta

Our "gamme" is a special one: it is a rounded cabin with a fire pit in the middle. You'll sit on reindeer hides, and see the smoke rise through the roof, while you enjoy your coffee or dinner. Perfect for groups of up to 18 people.

The fire pit

Whenever you just want to stare into the flames — let us know, we'll fire it up. We call it the "hunter's television".

The workshop

Every sled, bed and door handle was made here, by Sven himself. Take a peek inside his comfort zone.
