Information

The practical part

Everything you need to prepare for your Arctic adventure, all gathered in one place.

Getting here

Engholm Lodge sits beside the Kárášjohka river, 6 km west of Karasjok — from the road you'll spot the sign saying ENGHOLM LODGE. No matter where you are arriving from, your Arctic adventure is only a one-day journey away.

Lakselv
Via Lakselv — the nearest airport. Fly SAS or Norwegian to Lakselv. From there it is one hour to the lodge: by bus (Snelandia.no), or by taxi or rental car.
Ivalo (Finland)
Via Ivalo. Fly Finnair or Norwegian to Ivalo. A daily bus leaves the bus terminal (7 km from the airport by taxi) at 16.25 Finnish time and arrives in Karasjok at 17.40 (Eskelisen.fi). By car it is about 2.5 hours.
Alta
Via Alta. Fly SAS or Norwegian to Alta. The bus takes about 4 hours (Snelandia.no); by car it is about 2 hours.
Hammerfest
Via Hammerfest. Bus about 4 hours — or arrive the classic way, with the Hurtigruten Coastal Steamer, and continue by bus.
Car rental
AVIS and Hertz have desks at Alta, Lakselv, Kirkenes and Ivalo; carflexi.com compares them.
The last 6 km
Arriving by bus, get off at the Scandic Hotel Karasjok. From there it is a 6-minute drive: take a taxi (karasjoktaxi@gmail.com, +47 78 46 65 06) or book the lodge pick-up service in advance via post@engholm.no.

When to come

The same forest, the same river, the same fifty dogs — and almost nothing else in common between the months. Here is the honest year, so you can pick yours.

Nov – Dec
Mean −8 to −15°C
The tranquillity of the Arctic night: a few hours of blue dusk at midday, northern lights on clear nights, and cold, clear, stable weather. The first sled training runs on the frozen lakes and rivers.
Jan – Feb
Mean −17°C
The deep of winter, and the heart of the northern lights season. At the end of January the days lengthen and the sun reappears above the horizon. Out on the plateau you meet nobody but the Sámi reindeer herders.
Mar – Apr
Mean −10 to −3°C
Milder, with longer and brighter days — the classic touring months, with more people in the mountains. Northern lights until the beginning of April. April brings the reindeer migration, good ice fishing and crusted spring snow — hard, fast and easy to travel on; from mid-April it stays bright even at night.
May
Mean +4°C
Mild days, chilly nights, and 24-hour daylight — the midnight sun arrives mid-month. Dog sledding can still be good until early May, Norway celebrates its national day on the 17th, and it is the perfect time for skiing on Spitsbergen under the midnight sun.
Jun – Jul
Mean +10 to +13°C
The trees leaf out mid-June. July is salmon season on the river — and mosquito season on the land. The canoes go in the water, and the sun never sets.
Aug – Sep
Mean +10 to +5°C
Harvest time: berries, mushrooms, the hunting season. The mosquitoes are gone from mid-August; September paints the Finnmarksvidda in autumn colours, and the darker nights bring the auroras back. The best time for hiking.
Oct
Mean −1°C
The hinge between summer and winter — first snow, the lakes and rivers freezing. Auroras are frequent: the continental climate means clear, stable weather, and there is no light pollution here at all.

Chasing the lights? The northern lights are visible here roughly from the beginning of September to early April, with October, February and March the most reliable months. The longer answer — physics and all — is in the questions & answers.

What to bring

One equipment list for every activity, written by the people who run it and sorted the way the site is: sled dog, ski and other. Every activity page links straight to its own list, and the lists below are the same ones.

Proven on our own tours

Equipment — both personal items and what we provide — is essential, not only for your safety, but also for your overall experience in the wild. Winter temperatures in the Arctic can drop as low as −40°C, and winds can reach over 30 metres per second. It is therefore vital that we rely on high-quality equipment built for these extreme conditions. We have compiled a detailed equipment list to help you select the clothing and gear that will ensure a comfortable and safe journey.

What a list tells you

First what we provide — included in the price, or for hire and at what price. Then what to wear on the day, what to bring, and on the journeys what to change into and what goes in your sled bag. Every line has a tick box, so print the list and pack against it.

The layer principle — wool or similar next to the skin, a warm middle layer, and a lined, windproof outer layer. Click to enlarge.

Fitness levels

Every activity carries a fitness level from 1 to 4 in its fact box. The level describes the effort — how many hours a day, how many days in a row, what you pull or carry and where you sleep. It says nothing about skill: whether you need to have skied or driven a sled before is stated on the activity itself, and most of the time the answer is no.

Level 1
Easy
Anyone in normal health, children included. Up to four hours, much of it standing, sitting or on a short walk, with breaks whenever you want them — and you can sit out any part of it. No experience needed.

Tours at this level

Dog Sled Ride · Reindeer Herder Experience · Husky Farm Visit · Canoeing on the Kárášjohka · Sled Dog Training Visit · ATV Safari with Guide

Level 2
Moderate
People who walk regularly and are happy to be outdoors all day in the cold. Half a day to a full day of activity, three to six hours, on snow, uneven ground or up a hill, with the dogs, on skis or with a backpack. You are back at the lodge the same day. No experience needed.

Level 3
Demanding
People who exercise a few times a week and are used to long days outdoors. Full days on consecutive days: five to eight hours of dog sledding, skiing with a pulk or hiking with a pack, and nights in a mountain cabin, a lavvu or a tent. You run beside the sled on the uphills and help with the camp. Previous multi-day trips help, but are only required where the activity says so.

Level 4
Strenuous
Very fit people with previous expedition or multi-day winter experience. Expedition level. Long days with a heavy pulk or pack, week after week in Arctic weather, sometimes without a rest day, camping throughout. Build your fitness with training beforehand — and ask us if you are unsure; we would rather talk it through before you book.

Tours at this level

Tour of the Year · Expedition to the Arctic Sea · Finnmark Plateau North–South Skiing Expedition · Skiing Expedition to Ny-Ålesund — Spitsbergen · Spitsbergen South–North — Svalbard på langs · Trekking Expedition in the Wild Heart of Spitsbergen

The levels are our honest estimate for normal conditions — a storm day, deep snow or a headwind can push any trip a notch up. If you have a medical condition or a physical limitation, tell us when you book; a great deal can be arranged, see sledding for everyone.

Questions & answers

The questions every guest asks around the long table, answered the way we answer them there. More are added as you ask them.

You learn it here, on the first day. Harness training comes first, and beginners start with a tandem team: two sleds sharing eight to ten dogs, with the guide setting the pace. It is a huge misunderstanding to think that it is better to have your own team from the start, or that the bigger the team the better — on the week-long tours you graduate to a single team when you are ready.

A team of four to ten dogs runs in pairs: wheel-dogs closest to the sled, team-dogs in the middle, the leaders in front. Starts are the high-adrenaline moment — forty to fifty huskies who all know it is time for "walkies" — so sleds stay tied to a tree until the moment of departure.

On the trail the rules are few: lean into the corners with your weight on the inside runner; brake gently rather than stamping repeatedly, which only tires the dogs; run between the runners on the uphills; and relax — you can pass the close-your-eyes test sooner than you think. The guide leads, the teams follow. By day three, the dogs recognise you. Try not to fall in love before the team-swapping settles.

Probably, yes — Karasjok often has more stable and clear weather than the coast, especially on cold winter nights. A clear sky matters more than a high KP index, since Karasjok is so far north that even low solar activity can bring vibrant northern lights. You can see them from the beginning of September to early April, normally between 6 pm and 2 am. October, February and March are the best months. Between April and late August it is too bright to see them.

"Aurora Borealis" means "northern dawn": charged particles from the sun meeting oxygen and nitrogen 100–300 km overhead. Activity also follows the eleven-year sunspot cycle. Our honest recommendation: come before the end of March, while the nights are still properly dark.

The indigenous people of northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia’s Kola peninsula — possibly descended from the Komsa people who lived on this coast eight to ten thousand years ago. Their history runs from hunter-gatherer societies organised in siidas to the reindeer-herding culture the world associates with Sápmi — though the coastal Sámi lived as farmers and fishermen, and today less than 10% of Norwegian Sámi are reindeer herders.

From the 1700s the Sámi were put under heavy "norwegianization" pressure, which is why the numbers are uncertain — estimates say 50–80,000 Sámi today. The language is related to Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian, not to Norwegian. Karasjok, our neighbouring village, is the seat of the elected Sámi Parliament.

A guided tour of the Parliament, the National Sámi Museum and much more is a day trip from the lodge — and on several journeys you meet reindeer-herding families at work, not on display.

Sven raced from 1977 to 2000. He won the Finnmarksløpet — Europe’s longest sled dog race, created by Sven and his fellow mushers — eleven times, a record that still stands. He won Femundløpet in 1992 and 1994, including the 500 km "Olympic dog race", took 3rd place in the Beargrease in the USA in 1993, and finished the 1800 km Iditarod in Alaska four times: 20th in 1996, 12th in 1997, 14th in 1998 and 9th in 1999.

All meals from dinner at 19.00 on the first day until breakfast on the last; all tour equipment; Arctic clothing on mushing tours; the guide and the activities of the programme; design-cabin accommodation at the lodge and dormitory beds at the mountain cabins. Not included: personal equipment, individual services, insurance, and transport to and from the lodge.

Very possibly — we can arrange for guests with disabilities or other physical limitations, from a passenger place on the guide’s sled to adapted programmes. Contact us and we will figure out honestly together what works.
