Spitsbergen South–North — Svalbard på langs

For the spring of 2027 we offer "the biggest ski expedition you can do in Svalbard": the full length of the island of Spitsbergen, from south to north. The route is approximately 600 km, covering glaciers, sea ice, mountain passes and big valleys, with snowmobile transport to the starting point and from the finish.

For 2027 we are planning to do one of the "classics" among the long-distance ski expeditions: Svalbard på langs, or "Spitsbergen South to North".

This is a real expedition, and it takes a certain amount of dedication, preparation and training — but the pay-off is very much worth it. The trip is the same distance as a Greenland crossing, but the landscapes are varied and the terrain is challenging in a completely different way than Greenland: we cross massive glaciers, traverse valleys and sea ice, and climb and descend some 7 000 m of elevation. This is a trip of a lifetime, for guests and guides alike.

Who can join

This is a trip only for those with prior Turgleder expedition experience, or similar. If you wish to join but need more experience, we offer a serious discount on a Finnmark expedition beforehand — more information on request.

Due to the unpredictable nature of an expedition like this, we encourage everyone to have some flexibility in their homebound travel plans. The weather can vary during the day, and with respect to the safety of our guests we reserve the right to make any necessary changes to our trip. We always recommend allowing for weather delays when booking flights.

In Longyearbyen you are lodged at a guesthouse; single rooms are available for an additional NOK 900 per night, NOK 2 700 for the three nights. On the nights in tents, teams of 2 to 3 persons share one tent. We would encourage you to stay a few extra days in Longyearbyen to explore the town and its surroundings — and to stay one or more days after the trip as a margin for weather-related delays coming back from the ice.

Programme

Day 1

Arrival in Longyearbyen, supper and briefing. Lodging at a guesthouse or hotel.

Day 2

Packing the equipment, last-minute shopping. Lodging at a guesthouse or hotel.

Day 3

Snowmobile transport to the starting point, 4–6 hours.

Days 4–37

Expedition days — glaciers, sea ice, mountain passes and big valleys, the full length of Spitsbergen from south to north. All nights in tents.

Day 38

Pick-up at the finish and snowmobile transport back to Longyearbyen, 8–12 hours. Dinner and lodging at a guesthouse or hotel.

Day 39

Breakfast and journey home.
