Your guide will lead you from wilderness lodge to wilderness lodge. Your luggage is loaded onto a big dog sled so you can ski comfortably. The terrain is open, flat and easy to ski across, and the varied, open Arctic tundra landscape is perfect for skiing.
Accommodation during the ski tour is in mountain and wilderness cabins, before and after the tour at Engholm Lodge. We will visit a Sámi reindeer herder and his family at their winter quarters and their herds. We have run this trip since the 1980s.
How we travel
All equipment is loaded on a big dog sled, which is driven by the guide and pulled by about 14 sled dogs. You will only be carrying a light rucksack for thermos, lunch pack and an extra pullover.
Good to know
We recommend you to consider staying some extra days for interesting activities as a lodge guest before or after the tour.
Day by day plan
- Day 1
- The programme starts with dinner at 7 pm. Then your guide will give the first briefing regarding the tour.
- Day 2
- After a good breakfast, all equipment is loaded on the big dog sled, driven by the guide and pulled by about 14 sled dogs. You will only be carrying a light rucksack for thermos, lunch pack and an extra pullover. After a steep climb up we pass over a hilly stretch, crossing lakes and marshes, to Gardin mountain cabin.
- Day 3
- We reach the tundra, a fascinating landscape where the view is endless in all directions. Here the landscape is scanty and windswept. In the evening we arrive at Mollisjok mountain cabin — a "jewel" on the plateau.
- Day 4
- The tour continues southwards on the river, and we pass two remote settlements. The Sámi people who live here get their income mainly from fishing. We finish the day by crossing a big lake and find Soussjavre mountain cabin at the other end of the lake.
- Day 5
- The area we are skiing through is a very important winter pasture for reindeer. Sometimes it is possible to see large reindeer herds. After a long downhill to the Karasjok valley, we reach Baeivasgiedde, a small wilderness cabin beautifully situated next to the river.
- Day 6
- This day we visit a Sámi reindeer herder and his family at the winter pasture. We join in a meal with him and the other herders — an interesting day to get to know the Sámi culture. A second night is spent at Baeivasgiedde.
- Day 7
- A long stretch along the river to Beskenjarg, the road's end. A coach brings you to the lodge. A warm sauna is waiting for us, and we end the tour gathered in the warm atmosphere for a farewell dinner.
- Day 8
- The programme ends at breakfast.
