Reindeer Herder Experience
A day with a Sámi reindeer herder and his herd on the plateau — by snowmobile sled from the lodge.
"Visit a Sámi reindeer herder on the plateau" is an authentic product — a unique privilege made available by a Sámi family from Karasjok in Finnmark. This trip is recommended for people who would like to do something truly unique, and learn about the real Sámi culture and what their livelihood is today.
How the day goes
You will spend the day with a Sámi reindeer herder and his herd, and experience their daily work with the reindeer in their natural environment. You will be picked up at 10 am at Engholm Lodge by the herder with his snowmobile, and transported in the sled to the herd. Here you get the opportunity to get close to the animals, and a rare insight into the daily life of a Sámi reindeer herder. There is no reindeer sledding. Hot drinks are served around a campfire in the wilderness, together with the Sámi reindeer herder and their reindeer. We recommend that you bring a sandwich or something else to toast by the fire.
Who can join
Maximum 10 persons in a group — but we can have two groups at the same time, with different reindeer families.
Good to know
Warm clothes are required, and can be hired at the lodge.
We benefit from an extensive network that helps us create and organise authentic Sámi experiences. We cooperate successfully with Sámi reindeer herders and Sámi art and handcraft workers. This cooperation opens rare access to the Sámi culture and way of living, in addition to the breathtaking nature experiences you can expect in the Arctic north.

In December 2015 "All Aboard! – The Sleigh Ride" was shown on BBC Four on Christmas Eve — we had the role as local host and fixers.
