An interesting week with sleddogs and other adventure experience

Engholm Husky design lodge outside Karasjok - in the heart of the Sámi culture is your base the first four days. The program incl. 1 day trip with snowmobile to a traditional Sami reindeer herder with their reindeers on the plateu. It is perhaps possible for an extra day trip with a dog sled instead of a visit to a reindeer herd. It should be agreed in advance. 2 day for your own disposition for interesting activities. 3 days sled dog tour. On the tour, we overnight in mountain cabin on Finnmarks plateau.  Alternative we take other route and overnight in Engholm Husky wilderness camp. Cosy and warm basecamp tent, hidden in the wilderness. (Depending on weather conditions and time of year).

A reasonable level of fitness, concentration and a sense of balance are the key attributes needed. You will have your "own" sled and responsible for 4 -6 dogs. For participants who have experience with dog sledding, it is common to drive single dog team. With participants without previous experience of dog sledding, we normal start out the first day to driving a tandem team with 2 sleds and 8 - 10 dogs. You share a dog team with a partner or the guide. The guide and participants decide together whether it is best with double or single team. It is very easy to disconnect the sleds from each other so that there will be two single teams. 25-50km per day.

Detail program

Day 1: Program start with dinner at 19.00. Then your guide will give all information regarding the program.

Day 2 This day will be memorable. We travel beyond the beaten tracks by snowmobile to a winter settlement for Sámi reindeer herders who pursue their livelihood here on the winter pasture. You will be picked up 10.00 at Engholm Husky lodge by the herder with his snow mobile and transported in the sled to the herd. We may spend the day together with them and join their daily life with their reindeers and get insight in their way of living and herding. This adventure is a unique privilege made available for few by a Sámi family from Karasjok.

Day 3 and 4:  Those days are at your own disposal for interesting activities. There is always a lot happening on our farm. You are welcome to join in our daily life. Sled dogs may be in training. Yearlings learning to socialize and have their almost daily 1 hour training by the river (5 times a week).  Many interesting books from the smal "Dogmusher library".can be read. Smaller tours can be ventured upon alone if desired: Snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, tour with our kicksleds or walking in the beautiful and unspoiled landscape just out from the door step.

Following activities can be booked depending on vacancies:
- Day trip with the sled dogs. 4-5 hr.
- Guided northernlight safari with snow shoes 3-4 hr. Min. 2 pers.
- Learn cross country skiing. 4 hr. Min 2 pers.
- Snowshoe hike with icefishing, 4 hr. Min 2 pers.
- Snowmobile tour with guide, up to the Finnmarks plateau. 2hr or 5 hr.

Local handicrafts and shops can be found at the local Sámi village. The National Sámi Museum, guided tour at Norwegian Sami parliament, Sami art gallery, Sápmi theme park and the local knife smith are also worth visiting.

Day 5 - 7 Checking that mushers are matched with their teams of huskies. We start out on a 3 days tour. By now you and the huskies have usually got to know each other’s ways. After a steep climb up to the mountain plateau we are mushing over a hilly stretch, crossing lakes, marshes. We spent the nights at our wilderness camp. Cosy and warm basecamp tent, hidden in the wilderness. Alternative we take other route and overnight in a mountain cabin on Finnmarks plateau. (Depending on weather conditions and time of year).

The area we are dogsledding through, is a winter pasture for reindeers. We may meet the native reindeer herders - the Sámi - in their daily life on their winter pastures.

A long stretch back to Engholm Husky lodge through a variety of beautiful landscape. If we are lucky, we may see moose, as it usually stays in the valley during wintertime. Dinner gathered in the warm atmosphere is waiting for us at Engholm Husky Lodge. We have a cosy wood heated sauna and outdoor hot tub ready on request for those temted! Maybe with northern lights above.

Day 8: The program end at breakfast. It's worth considering whether to stay some extra days for interesting activities as lodge guest before and after the tour.
